Development of weaning foods for infants and estimation for its sensory, nutritional and storage parameters

Abstract: Nutrition is the major concern of mankind beginning from the time of conception and extending through the entire life span of an individual. Infants are one who come under the vulnerable sections of society. Infants must meet their nutritional requirements so as to ensure proper growth and development. Undoubtedly breast milk is the best food for infants. But they must be weaned at the age of 4-6 months because human milk alone is not sufficient to provide all nutrients required for maintaining the proper growth and development after this age. Due to inadequate or imbalanced nutrient intake, Infants suffer from many deficiency disorders like Protein Energy Malnutrition, Nutritional blindness, Iron deficiency Anaemia etc. Malnutrition among Infants is a serious public health problem, especially in developing countries. To overcome the nutritional disorder of Infants diet rich in protein, iron and calcium should be supplemented utilizing combination of staple cereals, pulses and nuts and oilseeds. Weaning foods was developed using Quality Protein Maize in combination with ragi, green gram, gingelly seeds and jaggery and evaluated for its sensory, nutritional and storage parameters.
