Abstract:
This study explores the textile heritage of Pochampally, a village in Telangana renowned for its globally acclaimed Ikat weaving tradition. Rooted in a history spanning over two centuries, Pochampally’s craft culture is shaped by skilled artisan communities, traditional pit and frame looms, and a sophisticated tie-and-dye technique that predetermines patterns before weaving. The research highlights the cultural, historical, and economic significance of Pochampally sarees—recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag—and examines how Ikat has evolved from a regional craft into a contemporary design language embraced by global fashion. Through insights into the weaving process, community practices, and the challenges posed by mechanized imitations, the study emphasizes ongoing revival efforts and the need for sustainable, artisan-centered models. Ultimately, it positions Ikat as a living craft that bridges past and present, preserving cultural memory while inspiring modern fashion innovation.
