Nutritional enhancement of oyster mushrooms using biochar-enriched substrates: Implications for household consumption

Author(s): Maria Lopez, Henrik Olsen and Ahmed Khalil
Abstract:
Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are an economically and nutritionally significant species of edible fungi that can contribute to household nutrition through their high protein content and bioactive compounds. Recent studies have investigated the use of biochar-enriched substrates to enhance the nutritional profile of oyster mushrooms. Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced from organic matter through pyrolysis, has been shown to improve soil health by enhancing nutrient retention and microbial activity. This research explores the potential of biochar-enriched substrates to enhance the nutritional content of oyster mushrooms and evaluates the feasibility of using this approach for sustainable household consumption. The research was conducted by growing oyster mushrooms on various substrates, including biochar-amended organic waste. The mushrooms were then analyzed for changes in protein content, essential amino acids, and other bioactive compounds. The results indicated a significant increase in the protein levels and antioxidant properties of mushrooms grown on biochar-enriched substrates, suggesting a promising avenue for improving the nutritional quality of mushrooms. The findings have implications for both household food security and sustainable agricultural practices. Biochar-enriched substrates not only provide a low-cost, locally available solution for enhancing mushroom yields but also contribute to waste management by recycling organic matter. This paper discusses the practical applications of biochar in mushroom cultivation and its potential to improve dietary diversity in rural households.
