Abstract:During the last few decades there has been a tremendous increase in the population of middle aged persons in India. Now that the life expectancy has risen, and continues to rise, middle age has become one of the major stages of the human life cycle. This shows that the magnitude of the problems of the adults is and will be increasing in India in the near future.
The present study was an exploratory attempt done with the major objective to assess the challenges of urban middle aged working adults residing in Udaipur city. Total number of 360 middle aged adults (180 males and 180 females) between the age range of 35-55 years comprised the sample. Subjects selected for the investigation were married, living in nuclear family setup and had at least 1 child living with them. A scale measuring challenges experienced by adults was developed and used to assess the challenges of the subjects. For data collection, selected subjects were approached by the investigator at government and private hospitals, banks and colleges. Percentages were calculated to find out the level of challenges experienced by middle aged adults. Z test was applied to find out the significant difference arising due to gender for the challenges experienced by mid-aged adults. Analysis of data revealed that working middle aged adults in urban areas experienced high level of socio-emotional challenges and low level of physical and financial challenges. The female respondents who participated in the reported greater incidence of challenges in the area of diminishing potentialities, role performance, family communication, social identity and decision making while male respondents were found to be facing a higher degree of challenges related to family cohesion and health anxieties respectively.
