Impact of social media on parent-child relationship among secondary school students

Author(s): Rajani Kumari and Achla Gakkhar
Abstract:
This study examined the impact of social media on parent- child relationship. The prevalence of social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube is causing a significant shift in family communication habits. Social media can provide easy ways for parents who work away from home to share updates, pictures, and messages, but there are still issues with less in-person engagement, distraction during family time, and disputes about screen usage. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data for a descriptive survey design, and frequency and percentage distributions as well as graphical representations were used for analysis. The majority of students report less family time and sporadic arguments related to social media use, according to the findings. Fewer people believe that social media enhances parent-child contact, particularly when it's used for exchanging academic updates or for coordinating. The study emphasizes the necessity of open communication between parents and teenagers, negotiated screen-time limits, and balanced digital engagement. Programmatic interventions, like family technology agreements, digital literacy training, and parent orientation workshops, may assist families in maximizing social media's good elements while reducing its negative ones.
