Study of waist to hip ratio among female sports persons (18-23 YRS) of colleges affiliated to mahatma Gandhi university, Kottayam, Kerala

Abstract:
Waist hip ratio is one of the indices in estimating the obesity. It is a measure of body fat and health condition of an individual and helps in predict out the risk for many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes. WHR is a better index in measuring body fat than BMI.
Objectives: aim of present study is to assess the body fat percentage and waist hip ratio among the selected female sports persons.
Methodology: 400 female sports persons of age category 18-23 yrs are selected for the present study. Waist hip ratio was determined with standardized method of waist hip ratio assessment.
Results: the mean waist to hip ratio among the studied group was. 727 ±.036. Statistical analysis shows a very weak positive correlation among the variables age and WHR as indicated by r=. 101 and p value =. 043.
Conclusion: A very small percentage of the participants had moderate and higher WHR. Support from coaches are needed to increase their fitness level.
