Attitude of secondary students towards home science: A study in Agra district

Author(s): Seema and Rajani Kumari
Abstract:
The present research aims to explore the attitude of secondary school students towards Home Science as an academic subject in the Agra district. With the evolving educational system and the emphasis on life skills, Home Science has gained significance for both male and female students. However, the subject still faces stereotypical biases and is often perceived as a domain suitable only for girls. This study attempts to assess the prevailing attitudes among students and to examine the influence of gender on their perceptions of the subject. A sample of 100 students, comprising 50 boys and 50 girls from various secondary schools in Agra, was selected using a random sampling method. Data were collected using a structured attitude scale and analyzed quantitatively. The findings indicate a noticeable difference in the attitude of boys and girls toward Home Science, with girls showing a more positive disposition. The results also highlight the need to promote gender-neutral awareness about the subject’s practical importance. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on curriculum development and gender sensitivity in education. It suggests integrating Home Science more holistically into secondary education with the aim of developing essential life skills in all students regardless of gender.
