Innovative textile blends: Exploring the synergy of nettle and nylon fibers for sustainable and high-performance fabrics
Author(s): Shyamli Pandey and Suman Pant
Abstract:
The rising demand for sustainable textiles has led to the exploration of innovative fiber blends that balance environmental responsibility with performance. This study examines the blending of nettle fiber (Urtica dioica) and nylon to evaluate their compatibility, mechanical properties, comfort attributes, and ecological impact. The research focuses on fiber processing, yarn formation, and fabric characteristics to assess the feasibility of nettle-nylon composites in contemporary textile applications, particularly home furnishings and accessories. Experimental findings suggest that incorporating nettle fibers into nylon-based textiles enhances moisture management, tensile strength, and biodegradability while mitigating the environmental footprint of synthetic materials. The study also highlights the potential of nettle-nylon blends in home furnishing applications, such as upholstery, curtains, and decorative accessories, where durability and sustainability are key considerations. The results underscore the viability of this novel fiber combination as a promising alternative for eco-conscious consumers and industries seeking to integrate sustainable practices into textile production. By leveraging the natural benefits of nettle fiber with the resilience of nylon, this study contributes to the growing body of research on sustainable fabric innovations, promoting the adoption of blended textiles with reduced environmental impact.
