Intergenerational conflict and conflict resolution strategies

Author(s): Ogboru Justina Oghenerioborue
Abstract:
Objective: This study examines the types and causes of intergenerational conflict and identify effective strategies for its resolution within family settings.
Background: Intergenerational conflict has become increasingly significant as families navigate rapid societal changes, including shifts in cultural values, technological advancements, and evolving social norms. These tensions often affect family cohesion, communication, and overall well-being, particularly in multigenerational households.
Methods: This study utilized a descriptive survey design. Participants included 300 individuals (150 older adults aged 60+, 150 younger adults aged 18-30) from multigenerational households in urban and suburban regions of Nigeria. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire and data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: The findings of the study revealed that the types of intergenerational conflict are: value-based conflicts, communication style conflicts, technological disparities, workplace conflicts among others. The causes of intergenerational conflict include: value differences and socialization, communication gaps and technological change, differences in work ethic and career expectations among others. The conflict resolution strategies across generational lines comprise: active listening and empathic communication, intergenerational dialogue programs, family systems therapy and intergenerational counseling among others.
Conclusion: Intergenerational conflict arises from differing values, communication styles, and life experiences across age groups, but it also presents opportunities for mutual growth and understanding. By embracing empathetic dialogue and inclusive strategies, individuals and institutions can transform generational tensions into collaborative and constructive relationships.
