The properties of Aloe vera in detoxification and nutritional enhancement

Author(s): Janhavi Yadav, Virginia Paul and Neeru Bala
Abstract:
Aloe vera a succulent plant renowned for its extensive therapeutic and nutritional properties, has played a pivotal role in traditional medicine for centuries. This review explores the bioactive composition of Aloe vera, with a particular focus on its detoxification potential and nutritional contributions, alongside its applications in contemporary healthcare. The plant's detoxifying effects are attributed to its rich phytochemical profile, including acemannan, aloesin, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant vitamins such as A, C, and E. These constituents work synergistically to enhance hepatic function, mitigate oxidative stress, and support gastrointestinal cleansing by promoting intestinal motility and maintaining mucosal integrity. Nutritionally, Aloe vera delivers a wide array of essential micronutrients, amino acids, enzymes, and polysaccharides, which contribute to improved digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall metabolic health. Beyond its digestive benefits, Aloe vera exhibits notable therapeutic effects in dermatology, where it’s anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties aid in the treatment of burns, wounds, and skin disorders. Its role in metabolic regulation is evidenced by emerging data on its efficacy in managing diabetes, obesity, and lipid profiles, while its immunomodulatory activity supports resistance to infections and chronic diseases. The plant's versatility is further demonstrated through its integration into a variety of value-added products-such as juices, gels, creams, and nutraceuticals-which have significant market potential in the global health and wellness sector. Innovative research continues to highlight Aloe vera’s role in personalized nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and even space-based food systems. Given the increasing interest in functional foods and natural health solutions, Aloe vera emerges as a promising candidate for advancing nutritional support and therapeutic interventions. Continued clinical investigation is warranted to fully elucidate its mechanisms and establish standardized applications in modern healthcare.
