Chamba Rumal: The embroidered heritage of pahari culture

Author(s): Annu, Saroj Yadav, Neelam M Rose and Shalini Rukhaya
Abstract:
Chamba Rumal is a unique and intricate art form originated in the Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh, India. This exquisite craft, known for its fine double-sided embroidery and vivid storytelling motifs, represents a rich cultural heritage deeply rooted in Pahari traditions. The technique involves delicate hand-stitched patterns, often depicting scenes from Indian mythology, nature and royal court life, crafted using silk threads on muslin or hand-spun fabric. Historically patronized by the royal families, this embroidery flourished as an expression of artistic refinement and cultural identity. Despite its historical significance, Chamba Rumal faces challenges in the modern era, including declining artisan communities, commercialization and the need for greater recognition. This review paper explores the historical evolution, artistic techniques, cultural symbolism and contemporary relevance of Chamba Rumal embroidery. It also highlights the efforts undertaken to revive and sustain this traditional craft through government initiatives, artisan collaborations, and design innovations. By analyzing its past and present, this study aims to emphasize the importance of preserving Chamba Rumal as a valuable intangible cultural heritage of India.
