Skill acquisition boot camps and employability of TVET graduates in Lagos state, Nigeria

Abstract:
The study focused on skill acquisition boot camps and employability of TVET graduates in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study was guided by four research questions. Descriptive survey research design was adopted by the study. Population for the study was 413. Sample size of 196 was obtained using Krejice and Margan table for sample size determination. Validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Reliability co-efficient of 0.98 was obtained using spearman’s rank correlation. Data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed that TVET graduates have knowledge about various skill acquisition boot camps. The employability skills that can be acquired through skill acquisition boot camps included ICT skills, Agro-allied business, skills in cosmetology, catering and confectionery among others. The problems TVET graduate’s face during boot camp skill acquisition included high cost of registration, fast paced learning approach, compressed curriculum. Also, the ways of enhancing TVET graduate’s boot camp skill acquisition included government provision of free boot camp training for graduates and subsidizing registration fee. Among recommendations made was that TVET graduates should be encouraged to acquire skills in different areas through skill acquisition boot camps as this would help to equip them for employability.
