Working conditions of handloom weavers in Panipat: A survey-based study

Author(s): Uma Joshi and Rakhi Kansal
Abstract:
Panipat,
often referred to as the “City of Weavers”, has been a significant hub for
India’s handloom industry. This study investigates the working conditions of
handloom weavers in this city of Haryana, has earned global recognition for
producing carpets, durries, blankets, and other handloom-based products. Using
a survey research methodology, data was collected from a sample of 50 weavers
to examine factors such as work hours, income, occupational health, access to
welfare schemes, and job satisfaction. The findings reveal several systemic
issues including long working hours, low income, lack of social security, and
health problems. The study highlights the challenges faced by weavers and
recommends policy interventions for sustainable improvement in weavers'
livelihoods.
