Abstract:
College-going age is a critical period of growth and development in the human life span. Over the last two decades, due to increased urbanization and globalization, there has been a drastic change in the lifestyle and dietary pattern of college going girls. They were more conscious about their physique. According to Ganesan et al. (2018), seventy-seven percent of college-going girl’s body image levels were dissatisfaction due to social and cultural pressure to be thin. This study understands the food consumption pattern and body image satisfaction level of college going girls. 150 college-going girls were selected randomly from Bhubaneswar city, Odisha. Results indicate that the majority, 58% of respondents, consume moderate oil in food. When analyzed by BMI (Body Mass Index), the majority, 54% of girls, came in as normal weight rather than underweight and overweight. In this study, the majority of girls were satisfied with their body image; few girls felt dissatisfied due to hormonal changes. It is strongly recommended that an appropriate nutritional awareness program be needed to educate for a healthy and maintaining lifestyle among college-going girls.
