Author(s): Nazla Nazrin and Athira Babu
Abstract:
The study entitled “Impact of Diabetes on Renal Health: A Comparative Study” was aimed to investigate the relationship between diabetes and renal health, and to compare the effects of diabetes on renal health in a particular populations or settings. A dual challenge of both diabetes and obesity is on rise among both males and females. Diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor of renal disease, leading to diabetic nephropathy, a primary cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Diabetic kidney disease develops in approximately 50% of patients who are diabetic and is the leading cause of CKD worldwide. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the complex relationships between diabetes and renal health, ultimately informing strategies for prevention, early detection, and effective management of diabetic nephropathy. By addressing the knowledge gaps in diabetic nephropathy research, this study aims to improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and enhance the quality of life for individuals living with diabetes. This study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining questionnaires and surveys. HbA1c test was reviewed from test guide by Dr.Vidya Jayadeep. The studies revealed that majority of the participants were unaware of their dietary choices and lifestyle activities. A cross-sectional survey utilized BMI calculation, dietary assessment and anthropometric assessments used for data analysis. Most of the participants are aware of some aspects of knowledge regarding diabetes and renal health. Basic questionnaire was provided to analyze their knowledge about diabetes and after the class same questionnaire was found to be 80% of success. The study identified a key factor which can contribute to more prevalence due to family history approximately 88%, complications of renal failure was more noticed on males than females (approx.62%). Issues in males were mainly due to insufficient physical activity, insufficient knowledge about dietary choices and lifestyle habits.
