Adapting traditional artisans: Revive jajam motifs in contemporary design

Author(s): Anjali Singh and Durgesh Mishra
Abstract:
Jajam textiles originating from Rajasthan were distinguished for their intricate block printing spread across large floors, used primarily for community gatherings, religious ceremonies and as decoration in homes. These textiles were not only symbols of artistic expression but also had deep cultural and social significance, representing unity and communal harmony. However, in the last few decades, various socio-economic changes have led to a decline in the use and utility of this craft. The practice of sitting culture became obsolete and limited use of Jajam textiles has led to the growing demand for mass-produced textiles and cheaper synthetic alternatives. This has led to socio-economic challenges for the artisans, including limited market access, lack of government support and reduced demand. In developing countries like India, where nearly 70% of the textile industry is in the informal sector and employs 4.5 million artisans, the present study explores the role of sustainable practices in preserving valuable cultural heritage. Present study will suggest the rival of the Jajam textile by using the motifs of Jajam textile as home décor items. The study uses a descriptive research design to analyze the potential benefits of reviving Jajam motifs in contemporary designs as well as by employing traditional artisans. The findings highlight the need for policymakers to promote the revival of Jajam motifs, provide training programs in technology and design for Jajam artisans, and establish market linkages to connect artisans to global markets.
