The impact of millet-based nutritional therapies on pre and post-nutritional status in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

Author(s): Swati Sharma and Rekha Shrivastava
Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this research was to investigate the impact of millet-based nutritional therapies on the pre and post-nutritional status of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: A sample of 50 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy was selected through convenience sampling. This study employed an experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach. Baseline data, including demographic details, were collected before initiating millet-based nutritional therapy. Patients received millet-based nutritional therapy throughout their chemotherapy. Data collected after chemotherapy included repeat anthropometric measurements, nutritional status assessment, dietary intake evaluation, biochemical measurements, and quality of life assessment. Statistical methods, including descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests, were used to analyze the data. Subgroup analysis and correlation analysis were also conducted to assess variations and relationships.
Results: The research demonstrated that millet-based nutritional therapies had a significant positive impact on the well-being of cancer patients during chemotherapy. There was a statistically significant relationship between the frequency of consuming millet-based dishes and the maintenance or improvement of weight and BMI before chemotherapy. However, the impact on post-chemotherapy nutritional outcomes was inconclusive.
Conclusion: Millet-based nutritional therapies show promise in improving the well-being of cancer patients during chemotherapy and their pre-chemotherapy nutritional status. These findings support the integration of millet-based nutritional therapies as part of holistic cancer care. Further investigation is needed to fully understand the impact on post-chemotherapy nutritional status.
Recommendations: Continue exploring the use of millet-based nutritional therapies as a complementary approach to support cancer patients during chemotherapy. Conduct larger-scale research with a more diverse patient population to validate the observed effects. Investigate the long-term effects of millet-based therapies on nutritional status and cancer outcomes.
