Empowering women through education: Role of NEP, 2020

Author(s): Arushi Jain and Sadhna Jain
Abstract:
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a landmark document that envisions the transformation of India's education system. NEP 2020 acknowledges that education is a potent catalyst for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The policy aims to create an inclusive and equitable educational landscape that eliminates gender disparities. NEP 2020 advocates for gender-sensitive curricula and the inclusion of diverse perspectives, including those of women, in textbooks and teaching materials fostering gender equality awareness among students.
NEP 2020 advocates for a safe and secure educational environment, particularly for girls. Improved physical infrastructure and safety measures in schools and colleges enhance the confidence of female students, reducing dropout rates. Holistic and multidisciplinary education with the provision of flexibility and choice in curriculum empowers women to challenge stereotypes, break gender barriers, and contribute across various sectors.
Open, Online, and Distance Education (OODE) an integral component of NEP 2020 expands the reach of education, particularly for women in remote and underserved areas, who may face geographical and social constraints. It allows women to access education on their own terms, providing flexibility in terms of time and location. It offers a platform for lifelong learning and upskilling, enhancing the employability and entrepreneurship prospects of women, especially in a rapidly evolving job market.
The Gender Inclusion Fund is designed to provide financial support to underprivileged female students. It encourages women to pursue advanced degrees and research by providing financial aid, thereby boosting their educational aspirations. Furthermore, the policy promotes skill development and vocational training, allowing women to gain valuable skills that can enhance their employability and entrepreneurship prospects.
By fostering inclusivity, choice, gender sensitivity, skill development, and financial support, NEP 2020 paves the way for women to be active participants in India's socioeconomic growth and development leading to a more equitable and empowered society.
