Effect of oral contraceptive pills on serum cholesterol levels in pre-menopausal women
Author(s): Dr. Sweta Vyas
Abstract:
This study examines the effects of oral contraceptive pills (OCP) on blood cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk in premenopausal women. We compared lipid profiles between OCP users and non-users aged 35-45 years. Results showed that OCP use significantly increased total serum cholesterol levels, especially in the 35-40 year age group. The findings suggest that OCP use may contribute to an elevated risk of myocardial infarction by altering lipid metabolism, though the pathogenesis remains unclear. These results underline the need for further research into the cardiovascular implications of OCP use.
