Abstract:The leather industry is a prominent sector in India, contributing significantly to both the domestic and international markets due to its high-quality and fashionable products. However, the rapid growth of this industry has led to the generation of substantial amounts of leather waste, including skin trimmings, keratin, fleshing, chrome shavings, and buffing residues. These waste materials, primarily composed of proteins, pose environmental challenges, particularly when disposed of through landfilling, which can lead to contamination and incur financial and energetic costs.
This study explores sustainable approaches to managing leather waste by repurposing it for fabric embellishment and enrichment. By reusing discarded leather scraps and worn-out leather garments, the study demonstrates the potential to create accessories, patches, and other products, reducing waste and extending the lifecycle of leather materials. This approach not only mitigates the negative environmental impact of leather waste but also offers opportunities for energy and material recovery, contributing to a more sustainable leather industry.
