Author(s): Sushma Kumari and Shakuntala Kumari
Abstract:
Nutritional deficiency Anaemia refers to a reduced red blood cell count due to poor diet habit, which is deficient in Iron, Proteins, Vitamins like Vitamin c, Vitamin b12 along with folic acid. Anaemia is a wide spread public health problems associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, especially in pregnant women and children. India is among the countries with highest prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in the world. Shoot of Triticum aestivum Linn. (Hindi Name-gehun, kanak, Sanskrit Name-godhuma) is called as a wheat grass, belonging to family: Gramineae. The consumption of wheatgrass in the Western world began in the 1930s as a result of experiments conducted by Charles Schnabel in his attempts to popularize the plant. Tender wheatgrass is an 8 to 10 days plant grown from bold wheat seeds. Thus wheatgrass is harvested just prior to this jointing stage, when the tender shoots are at their peak of nutritional potency. Wheatgrass is a powerful detoxifier, especially of the liver and blood. It helps neutralize toxins and environmental pollutants in the body. This is because wheatgrass contains beneficial enzymes that help protect us from carcinogens, including superoxide disumates (SOD) that lessens the effects of radiation and digest toxins in the body. The presence of 70% chlorophyll, which is almost chemically identical to Hemoglobin, in wheatgrass, makes it more useful in various clinical conditions involving Hemoglobin deficiency and other chronic disorders. Wheatgrass has twice the amount of vitamin A as carrot and higher in vitamin C than orange. It contains the full spectrum of B vitamins, as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and potassium in a balance ratio. So there is a need for its Popularization to relieve from nutrient deficiencies and disorder at minimum cost.
